When Should You Book Your Bridal Hair And Makeup Trial?

You said “Yes”, you’ve found the dress, and you’ve got enough inspiration saved on Pinterest to last you three lifetimes. Then a question pops up: “When should I book my hair and makeup trial?”

Don’t worry! At Roman K, we walk you through everything you need to know so you don’t leave timelines up to chance.

Start With The Booking, Not The Trial

Here's something most new brides don't realize: the trial and the booking are two separate things, and the booking should almost always come first.

Most salons and wedding beauty teams won’t hold your wedding date until you've actually booked their services — if you're waiting to do a trial before committing, you risk losing your shot.

This is doubly true for popular New York City salons like Roman K, where spring and fall wedding and bridal services dates sell out like hotcakes, especially on Saturdays. Book first, ask questions later.

The Best Window For Your Trial

So you've booked your team. Now, when do you actually do the trial?

The consensus is loud: Do the trial at least 2 to 4 months before the wedding. If you want a little more wiggle room, some experts say a comfortable 8 to 12 weeks out is a good margin.

Try to have your dress chosen (or at least the neckline and vibe) and key accessories decided. If you’re planning a color refresh or a significant cut, do it before the trial so your look matches the day.

Why that timing? Because your hair and skin will be close to what they’ll be on the actual date, but you’ll still have breathing room to refine.

Here’s a practical, rule-of-thumb timeline:

  • 6 to 12 months out: book your team for peak spring and fall weekends.
  • 8 to 12 weeks out: do your hair and makeup trial.
  • 4 to 6 weeks out: make changes, and schedule a quick follow-up if you’re shifting or refining the look.

Tie The Trial To A Real Event

If possible, schedule the trial before a day you’ll wear the look. A bridal shower, engagement shoot, or dress fitting works out great.

Here's the logic: you get to wear the look for a full day, see how it photographs, test how the makeup holds up, and get real feedback from the people who know you best. Think of it as an intimate, small venue gig before the actual stadium concert.

A small caveat: engagement photos tend to be more casual and relaxed in vibe, so if your bridal look is very formal or heavily done, you might want a different approach for those.
