Is NYC Tap Water Ruining Your Post-Summer Hair?

Coming back to the city after summer can feel like you’ve switched realities. One week you’re swimming with sea turtles and looking like a model in every snapshot; the next you walk out of the shower with your hair practically bellowing “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.”

What gives? Is it something in the water?

While NYC has a reputation for great tap water (some swear it’s the secret to those world-famous pizzas and bagels), our stylists at Roman K see the same pattern every summer: brittleness, faded or flat color, and tons of build-up that just won’t come off.

We’ll explain why summer started the problem, and how NYC tap water made it worse.

Post-Summer Hair 101

Your post-summer hair’s already crying out for help. The cuticle’s roughed up, your color’s gone from sun-kissed to sunburnt, and buildup has way more places to cling to. Like a rush-hour driver, your hair has zero tolerance for any more stress.

It’s a perfect storm of trouble:

  • Minerals and trace metals can sit on the hair surface, which makes color look dull or weirdly warm.
  • Chlorine and treatment residue can make your hair feel like sandpaper.
  • All of that buildup can block moisture, so your conditioner gives you relief for ten minutes — then your hair flips the switch right back to “haunted.”
  • Porous hair doesn’t reflect light quite as well, which is why shine disappears even after you’ve shampooed obsessively.

Here’s the kicker: city water doesn’t have to be “bad” to be a problem. Since your hair’s already in the red, you come home, and that daily shower starts leaving a little something behind.

That “something” can be mineral residue, chlorine, or trace metals from “historic” NYC pipes. Once it sticks, your hair will stop absorbing even the best conditioner, which means muted shine and persistent dryness. Worse: it also dulls your color.

Why Plain Clarifying Shampoo Misses The Mark

If the problem is buildup-related, a good clarifying shampoo can help clear out some oil, styling residue, or those pesky silicones we keep telling you to avoid.

But post-summer hair that you’ve been washing with unfiltered tap water may need a little extra “oomph”: if the issue includes mineral buildup, metal residue, or brassiness, scrubbing extra-hard with clarifying shampoo can dry out the hair even further — we don’t want that.

Often, the best result comes from pairing detox with one of our in-salon hair treatments, especially when your hair needs softness and a little TLC.

The Roman K Post-Vacation Reset

At Roman K Salon, we look at your hair first. We check the way your color’s shifted, stress-test your ends, inspect whether the surface feels coated, and only then do we suggest a path forward.

For instance, if we find that you’re holding a lot of build-up, we may recommend a chelating treatment first. Otherwise, we’d be trying to bring back shine and tone on hair that’s not ready for it.

After, our team may recommend a custom gloss as part of your maintenance to help bring back that magnificent shine. If your tone went on the same vacation you did, but never got the memo to come back, we may recommend a more complete hair coloring correction.

Before you leave, we’ll also give you product and wash-day recommendations. The goal is to help you keep your hair looking (and feeling) its best between appointments.
